Provenge Cancer Vaccine
7/29/2010 11:33:32 AM by Nina Simone

There is a first ever prostate cancer vaccine called Provenge. This drug actually uses the bodies own immune system to fight off the cancer. This vaccine roughly cost the patient $23,000 a month and around 4 treatments are needed.  As far as new drugs go this drug is fairly "safe", typical flu like symptoms can arise with this which is mild compared to some of the new drugs that are on the market today. This drug is used mostly in advanced stages of prostate cancer and through clinical trails the patients that have benefited from it say that the cost is worth every penny if they can live a little longer.  The average life extension is by 4 months.  That's the average. Most people that have prostate cancer are of retirement age and live with some sort of assistance from the government.   I was just wondering who really foots the bill?

That seems like a rough cost to support for four months of "added life". I don't understand why some people would go this way but maybe its because I'm not in their situations? What do you think about it Nina?

I agree it sounds like a lot of time and effort and money for little gain.

I have to agree with you both.  The money that is spent could just be given to the people who are going to live to make their lives a little easier instead of passing on the debt once you die.  With that being said, im not on my death bed so who knows what price i would pay if i was given a timeline.

Yeah I guess it would be a different perspective to be lying their and have to make the choice on what to do.
