So I was watching one of my favorite TV shows last night, 'The Universe', and they had Dr. Lene Hau from Harvard on explaining her new technology than enables her to actually slow down a beam of Light.  The shine a beam of light that is a Kilometer in length down a tube where it passes through a certain type of gas and it slows down to almost 0 and compresses to fit in an area less than a milimeter.    They said that this opens all new possibilities in data and physical object transmission.
